The name "Gorakhpur" derives from the Sanskrit Gorakshapuram, which means residence of Gorakhnath. Gorakhpur has located about 100 km from the Nepal border, 193 km from Varanasi, 260 km from Patna, and 270 km from Lucknow. It is one of the flood unsafe districts in Eastern Uttar Pradesh.

  • Gorakhnath Temple: Gorakhpur derives its name from Gorakhnath, who was a saint and toured all across India and writes a number of texts that form a portion of the canon of Nath Sampradaya. The Gorakhnath Math is a temple of the Nath monastic group of the Nath ritual. The Nath tradition was initiated by guru Matsyendranath. This math is situated in Gorakhpur, Uttar Pradesh on a large ground. The temple performs various cultural and social activities and serves as the cultural center of the city. A shrine called Gorakhnath Mandir was constructed in his honor at the location. The musical Light and Sound Show in the evening is the main attraction for tourists.

 

  • Railway Museum: Railway Museum in Gorakhpur opened in 2007 with the aim of representing the journey of trains in India and their importance in history. It is located near Golf Course; Railway Museum tells the history of the North Indian Railway. For that, several old coal-running trains and demo trains are placed up on display. Heavy machines and engines are also there to express the history of the world’s largest rail network. Among all these, Lord Lawrence’s Stream Engine is the major attraction because this engine was built in London in 1874 and was imported to India through the sea. It is also the first engine that was used by the North Indian Railway. Apart from this, there is also a gallery that shows uniforms worn by railway men at different times, clocks, furniture, a library, a photo gallery, and much more. Toy Train, is an important attraction of the museum which is specially set up for children. Another attraction of this place is the food plaza which is wonderfully constructed like a railway compartment.

 

  • Gita Vatika:  Geeta Vatika is one of the most famous temples in Gorakhpur. The temple contains statues of Radha and Krishna. Devotees usually visit that place to offer prayers here. It is located at a distance of 4 kilometers from the Gorakhpur railway station, this religious monument is also a tribute to India’s wonderful past. The Geeta Vatika was started by Swami Hanuman Prasad Poddar, who was the founder-editor of Kalyan. He existed on the grounds of this place for 45 years and set up the Hanuman Prasad Poddar Memorial Samiti.

 

  • Kushmi Forest: Kushmi forest is a picnic spot which is located in Ramgarh, Gorakhpur. It is located 10 km away from Gorakhpur city. Kushmi Forest is a dense forest, forest area starts with wonderful green tunnels and the main forest is loaded with lots of sal and sequoia trees. A wide variety of flora and fauna is present here. Sometimes, it is even possible to spot different wild animals like deers, monkeys, foxes, peacocks, etc. There is a temple nearby the forest which is dedicated to the goddess Budhia Mata, which is yet another reason that attracts a lot of tourists.
